Airbag Manufacturer Takata Under Pressure To Speed Up Recalls

In the wake of numerous issues with airbags that were manufactured by the Japanese auto parts manufacturer Takata Corp. and amid pressure from U.S lawmakers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has made a written request to Takata to provide information on the company’s ability to produce replacement units for the more than 7 million vehicles that have been affected by the recall.

According to Mr. David Friedman – the deputy administrator of the NHTSA, the manufacturer is not only required to fulfill its obligation to replace the defective airbags but to also identify any other air bags that might also be faulty.

In a recent statement, he advised:

To date, there have been approximately 7.78 million vehicles that have been fitted with the potentially defective safety devices with two deaths associated with the defective airbags, which expelled metal and plastic shrapnel into victims when the airbags deployed.

In response to the request, Mr. Alby Berman, a spokesman from Takata, was quoted as saying:
