Chatham County Head On Results in Serious Injuries
Authorities from the North Carolina Highway Patrol (NCHP) have released details on a head on accident that occurred on Highway 15-501 at the Deep River Bridge in Chatham County, just north of Stanford.
It’s believed that 62 year old Mr. Joel Cheek of Chapel Hill was driving a Chevrolet pickup and attempted to pass a vehicle that was driving ahead of him.
As Mr. Cheek veered into the southbound lane to overtake the vehicle, an oncoming Ford passenger vehicle driven by 52 year old Mr. Frank Smith of Sanford veered left to try and avoid Mr. Cheek’s Chevrolet.
After Mr. Cheek saw the oncoming Ford, he swerved right to try and avoid an accident, but ended up colliding head on as a result.
While Mr. Cheek refused treatment by emergency staff at the scene, the driver of the Ford was taken to a local hospital for observation.
The investigation continues.
