Man Charged in Fatal Accident in Durham, North Carolina
ABC 11’s Tamara Gibbs reports that an accident involving four vehicles at the intersection of Morreene Road and Erwin Road has resulted in one death.
The multi-vehicle accident occurred at 3 p.m. on Monday Dec. 22. Police report that the car accident occurred when Jacob Samuels, an 18-year-old from Chapel Hill, ran a red light while traveling south on Erwin Road.
After running the red light, Samuels struck a Duke passenger van. The Van was being driven by Vincent Davis, a 52-year-old man. As Samuels’ car struck the van, the van was flipped onto its side.
Davis died at the scene. Two passengers in the van were transported to the hospital for treatment for minor injuries. Davis was a long time employee of Duke Parking and Transportation and also served his community by coaching in a youth football league. The university will be mourning Vincent with grief counselors being arranged to help his family, friends and co-workers deal with the tragedy.
Samuels has been charged with running a red light and causing a fatal car accident. Our heart goes out to the loved ones of Vincent Davis at Duke. Unfortunately, no matter how many times cops pull bad drivers over for speeding infractions or other traffic violations, hundreds of North Carolina residents are seriously and fatally injured each year.
