According to a real-world study that was done by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, texting while driving far exceeds earlier laboratory research. The study shows that drivers who texts or dial their cell phones while driving, especially younger drivers, are more likely to have a collision than other drivers.

For this study, video cameras, GPS, lane trackers, and other sensors to measure speed and acceleration were installed to cars of 42 newly licensed drivers between 16 and 17 years old as well as 109 adult drivers. The risk of a crash or potential crash among the younger drivers increased exponentially if they were dialing or reaching for a cell phone but even more if they were trying to send or receive a text message.

Although the methods of this study have been questioned, everyone seems to agree that texting should not be done. The distraction that comes from texting and taking your eyes off the road are dangerous.

Information from the Governor’s Highway Safety Administration indicates that 41 states have banned text messaging while driving and 37 states have banned the use of cell phones while driving for novice or teen drivers.
