What is Belviq?

Belviq (lorcaserin) is a prescription medication that is used to help overweight or obese adults in their weight loss and weight management efforts. It is manufactured and distributed in the U.S. by the pharmaceutical company Eisai Inc. under the brand names Belviq and Belviq XR.

In recent years, research has indicated a link between Belviq and lung cancer, as well as certain other types of cancer like pancreatic cancer and colorectal cancer.

Does Belviq Cause Lung Cancer?

Alarming research reveals that Belviq may cause lung cancer.

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial — conducted by Eisai Inc. in 2018 under the direction of the FDA to evaluate the risk of cardiovascular problems in patients taking the drug — it was revealed that while there was not a risk of cardiovascular problems associated with Belviq, an increased risk of cancer diagnosis (including lung cancer) was found in those taking Bleviq vs. the placebo.

“Belviq may cause lung cancer and our attorneys are actively investigating these claims.”

The National Library of Medicine later did an analysis of the study to investigate the validity of these results. Its findings support those of the initial studies and suggest that the greatest incidents of risk lie in patients developing lung or pancreatic cancers.

This links Belviq to a significant increased risk for lung cancer in people who have taken the drug. Studies are still ongoing, but so far the research supports these claims.

To be clear, research suggests that Belviq can cause lung cancer. Potential victims deserve justice.

“I’m taking Belviq. What should I do?”

While there is no recommendation for immediate cancer screening, you should talk to your doctor about your risk for cancer and what alternative treatments may be available to help you manage your weight.
