Can Water Contamination Cause Female Infertility?

Toxic substances in drinking water and other water that humans come into contact with have often been associated with a variety of health issues, including female infertility. Research is ongoing to explore potential links between water contamination and female infertility at Camp Lejeune.

However, the chemicals found in Camp Lejeune’s water supply have been associated with a variety of congenital disabilities (birth defects), such as congenital heart disease. For example, a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that cases of congenital heart disease were higher in areas with high levels of contamination by industrial toxins like those found at Camp Lejeune.

This has led researchers to look more closely at the impact of these chemicals on female infertility and examine if people who lived and worked at Camp Lejeune are more likely to experience female infertility.

Chemicals in the Water at Camp Lejeune

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) tested the water at Camp Lejeune for PFAS chemicals after many former service members and civilian employees showed signs of serious health issues. The ATSDR found:

  • trichloroethylene (TCE),
  • tetrachloroethylene (PCE),
  • vinyl chloride (VC),
  • and benzene around Camp Lejeune that were far above a safety threshold set by EPA officials.

Did Camp Lejuene Contaminated Water Cause Female Infertility?

The CDC has determined that those exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune were at higher risk of infertility. It seems very possible that contaminated water at Camp Lejeune caused infertility among many women exposed.

A study published by the CDC evaluating the health consequences of exposure to Camp Lejeune’s contaminated water found higher cases of infertility at the camp than at a comparable military camp.

This led the CDC to conclude that workers at Camp Lejeune were at a higher risk for female infertility, likely due to their exposure to TCE and PCE, which have been known to cause infertility and birth defects.

A study published in the American Journal of Life Science Researches evaluated the effect of TCE exposure on the fertility of mice and found that regular exposure to TCE created changes in the mice’s reproductive system and made them less fertile compared to the controls.

While studies like this cannot be performed on humans, they are strong indicators that the chemical being studied adversely affect humans. This supports the idea that exposure to TCE at Camp Lejeune may have put people at risk for female infertility.
