Has the Social Security Administration already denied your application for benefits?
The reality is that many people in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro areas, and throughout North Carolina, are often turned down for disability benefits, sometimes more than once.
If this describes your situation, the disability attorneys at Riddle & Brantley may be able to help.
Most first-time applicants are denied benefits because they do not supply the local Disability Determination Services agency with enough documentation to support their claim.
The requirements for proving disability, especially for what the Agency calls “younger individuals” (those under 50), are very stringent. Gathering all the documents and information you need to win your case can be a complicated, time-consuming and stressful process.
This is where an experienced, skilled disability law firm on your side can mean the difference between winning and losing.
The disability lawyers at Riddle & Brantley have been helping clients in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro areas for decades. We know the system and can help you navigate the claims and appeal process.

How Do I Qualify for Social Security Disability?
The SSA uses what they call a “Five-Step Sequential Analysis” for determining eligibility.
Before you apply for disability benefits, it’s helpful to familiarize yourself with these five questions:
- Are you working? In order to qualify for disability benefits from the SSA, you cannot earn more than around $1,200 per month.
- Is your condition severe enough? The SSA wants to know whether or not the severity of your condition prevents you from working.
- Is your disability in the “Blue Book”? The SSA automatically qualifies an applicant for disability benefits if their condition is found in its list of qualifying disabilities, and they meet certain other criteria. You can view this list
- Can you do the same work you did before? If you’re able to perform work similar to that which you’ve engaged in over the past 15 years, you may not qualify for disability benefits when the SSA reviews your claim.
- Can you do another of work? Your claim will be evaluated by the SSA to see if you can perform another type of work using what they call “residual functioning capacity.”
