North Carolina Teens Take Part in Driver Safety Course

Last Saturday, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol hosted a safe driving course that was attended by roughly 70 teenage motorists from across the state.

The training program implemented by the B.R.A.K.E.S. organization, (Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe,) was created by drag racing star Doug Herbert after his two sons were killed in a crash in 2008. B.R.A.K.E.S., a nonprofit organization, provides a free and advanced driver’s education to those who want more than just a conventional course. The goal is to help young drivers develop a conscientiousness behind the wheel that they may not get with only the minimum amount of education.

The program is not just for teen drivers; parents are encouraged to join in and refresh their knowledge of safe driving basics. One parent, Amy Brown-Douglas, attended with her son, and said that the experience was eye-opening.

Statistically, 5,000+ teenagers will die each year as a result of a traffic accident. About 11,000 teenagers and their parents have attended B.R.A.K.E.S. programs nationally since the organization was founded. Herbert hopes that this program will make young drivers safer and that it will prevent other families from experiencing the loss that he did.
