Prescriptions for Type 2 Diabetes

Some prescription Type 2 diabetes drugs including Byetta, Janumet, Januvia, and Victorza have been linked to serious health issues in some users. According to the Food and Drug Administration, these drugs have been linked to pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer. The attorneys at Riddle & Brantley are investigating potential claims on behalf of users of these drugs who have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

In April 2005 the world was introduced to a new medication for diabetes type 2 patients. According to the American Diabetes Association more than 25 million adults and children suffer from diabetes. These drugs were manufactured to improve blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetes patients.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and is a disorder in which not enough insulin is produced or the cells ignore the insulin produced. Commonly type 2 diabetes is characterized as insulin resistant and was formerly known as adult on-set diabetes.

There are many types of treatment and care available for those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, including lifestyle changes and medication use. Byetta has become a widely used drug to treat the disorder since it came onto the market; however, the growing use of the product has also brought to light the many side-effects of the drug.

If you or a loved one has suffered due to the use of Byetta, the victim may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and more.

How Byetta Works

High blood sugar is the main concern amongst people living with type 2 diabetes, and Byetta is a type of drug that helps regulate the rate at which glucose enters into the bloodstream. Byetta signals the pancreas to send just enough into the bloodstream at the right time to control blood sugar levels.

Furthermore the drug stops the liver from producing too much glucose when your body doesn’t need it, such as after meals. According to the manufacturer, Byetta can also aid in how quickly food and glucose leave the stomach in an effort to normalize glucose levels.

Byetta is an injectable medication that comes in a prefilled “pen.” A doctor must show the patient how to properly inject the medication under the skin in the abdominal, thigh or upper arm area. Typically Byetta is administered twice daily although a once-weekly injection was approved in January 2012.

Byetta Side-Effects

As with most drugs, certain side effects of the drug occur, with the most common being gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, and “sour” stomach.

Some other side effects include:

  • Low Blood Sugar – A person has a higher risk of experiencing hypoglycemia if Byetta is mixed with other medications
  • Severe Allergic Reactions
  • Kidney Problems – the drug could cause new, or worsen, kidney problems and ultimately lead to kidney failure
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Jittery Feeling

In 2007 the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) added an additional warning to the Byetta label to include the dangers of developing acute pancreatitis. In 2008 the first lawsuit stemming from injuries caused by the use of an exenatide was filed.

According to a 2011 study by the University of California at Los Angeles, the use of Byetta may also increase an individual’s risk of developing pancreatic cancer by 290 percent and thyroid cancer by 473 percent. Furthermore, in March 2013 the U.S FDA announced that they would be investigating reports of the possible increased risks of the use of drugs in the incretin mimetic class, including Byetta.
