NDMA Contamination in Metformin

In 2019, the FDA announced an investigation into NDMA contamination in Metformin. NDMA is a dangerous chemical that can cause cancer. It is listed as a “probable carcinogen” by the World Health Organization, the Environmental Protection Agency, and other scientific organizations, meaning that it may cause cancer in humans.

NDMA contamination means that Metformin may cause cancer, including liver cancer and as many as 20 other types of cancer.

Multiple manufacturers of Metformin have announced voluntary recalls and those taking the drug are encouraged to talk with their doctor about potential cancer risk and possible alternatives.

Metformin and Liver Cancer: What’s the Connection?

No studies have determined a causal relationship between Metformin and liver cancer, however, recent scientific research shows a clear link between NDMA and liver cancer.

A report by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry found that “when rats, mice, hamsters, and other animals ate food, drank water, or breathed air containing lower levels of NDMA for periods more than several weeks, liver cancer and lung cancer as well as non-cancerous liver damage occurred.”

This report also suggested that NDMA ingestion may cause non-cancerous liver damage, as well.

That’s not all, however.

A separate study in 2006 also determined that “N-Nitrosodimethylamine causes liver cancer.” 

Given that NDMA has been found in Metformin and that NDMA causes liver cancer, it seems likely that there may be elevated Metformin liver cancer risk.
