Potential Metformin Stomach Cancer Risk
In September 2019, an independent lab reported that it had detected levels of NDMA in Metformin, the world’s most commonly prescribed medication for type 2 diabetes. NDMA is a dangerous chemical that is classified by numerous health and scientific organizations as a “probable carcinogen,” meaning it may cause cancer in humans. NDMA has also been discovered in other popular medications, including Zantac. One of the 20+ cancers that may be linked to NDMA is stomach cancer.
In the wake of these recent findings, the FDA has launched an investigation and many Metformin manufacturers have issued voluntary recalls.
Does Metformin cause stomach cancer?
While there has been no causal relationship between Metformin and stomach cancer established, the scientific evidence does suggest that NDMA (as found in Metformin) can cause stomach cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “NDMA consumption is positively associated with either gastric or colorectal cancer.”
A separate study published in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention reported that ingesting NDMA may cause stomach cancer.
NMDA is classified as a probable carcinogen by such scientific authorities as the WHO, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to the available evidence, NDMA in Metformin may cause stomach cancer.
