Mirena IUD

***UPDATE: Please note that Riddle & Brantley is no longer accepting these cases.

Mirena on the Market

Mirena is an intrauterine device which is inserted into the uterus and releases hormones for long-term birth control. It is a T-shape frame that releases a progestin causing the cervical mucus to thicken preventing sperm from reaching or fertilizing the egg. It also helps to thin the lining of the uterus to assist in suppressing ovulation.

This intrauterine device also has been linked to many negative side effects following its release into the market. The maker of Mirena, Bayer Inc., has been accused of failing to warn the public about the risks and side effects of this method of birth control.

At Riddle & Brantley, our dangerous drug attorneys believe that if you or a loved one has suffered a serious side effect from a pharmaceutical drug or medical product, the victim may be eligible to receive compensation benefits for their losses and damages.

Mirena IUD Marketing Tactics

The Mirena IUD was approved in 2000 for the market use by the Food and Drug Administration. This is also the only hormonal IUD that the FDA has approved to this day. Thus, it gives many individuals the idea that it is completely safe to use, however there may be many adverse side effects. Of course, many of the Mirena IUD marketing tactics used may make this product hard to resist.

Bayer would create a direct marketing program for Mirena which was called the “Mirena Parties”. These were essentially house parties hosted by members of Mom Central, a social networking site. These parties would usually be held at a person’s place of living or another private setting. These parties would also feature certain words to attract customers.

While at the Mirena party, a nurse practitioner and a member of Mom Central would read a script using key phrases such as “look and feel great”, “simple ways to reconnect with ourselves and our partners, and “more likely to be more intimate”. Of course, these ads appealed to many women and started selling phenomenally.

It was not until December 2009, when the FDA would send a letter to Bayer regarding the Mirena Party commercials. This letter would explain how Mirena was not being marketed correctly, and rather than clearly indicating it is a means of contraception, it was being marketed as a way to increase romance, intimacy, and emotional satisfaction, which was misleading to individuals using Mirena. Additionally, the commercial did not mention any information on potential side effects and seemed to downplay the risks.

Mirena IUD Uterus Perforation

Mirena has many side effects, which are demonstrated in the following section; however one of the adverse side effects from using the Mirena IUD is perforation of the uterus. This typically occurs when the device is first inserted and has been estimated that one person per 1,000-10,000 insertions result in this uterus perforation.

Uterine perforation occurs when the contraceptive moves from its proper location, thus causing the uterus to puncture. The device is also known to migrate or become lost in the abdominal cavity, which may result in a puncture to the bladder, intestines, or bowels. Of course, research has proved that certain women are more susceptible to uterine perforation including women who have had abortions, C-sections, surgeries on the cervix, or women who are breastfeeding.

Some of the symptoms of a perforated uterus include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Bloating
  • Chills
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Increased heartbeat
  • Nausea
  • Unable to locate Mirena IUD string
  • Vomiting

If you are suffering from any of these conditions, it is recommended to seek medical attention as perforation of the uterus may be life-threatening.

Mirena Birth Control Side Effects

In addition to uterine perforation, there are many additional side effects that may be caused by the Mirena birth control. These side effects may also be life threatening if they are not attended to immediately. Some common side effects related to the use of the Mirena IUD include:

  • Cancer (rectal, cervical, breast, ovarian)
  • Abscesses
  • Cramping
  • Embedment in uterus
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Expulsion
  • Gastric cancer
  • Group A streptococcal sepsis
  • Infertility
  • Infection
  • Peritonitis
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Perforation of uterus or ovaries
  • Rectal cancer
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Uterine cancer
  • Death

If you are suffering from any of these side effects, consult your doctor immediately. Usually the medical providers can safely remove the defective device but in some cases surgery may be needed to remove the device. Some rare cases may require a full hysterectomy. Seeing a medical professional may help you obtain the necessary treatment you need to correct your medical problem, and it may also provide you with the necessary medical documentation required to build a robust case against the responsible party that caused your injuries.
