Tylenol was originally created in the 1950s as an alternative to aspirin, which can irritate the stomach when it is taken without food. The drug is intended to relieve pain, fever, cold, cough, allergies, and flu symptoms with the active ingredient acetaminophen. Tylenol is owned by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, which is a subsidiary of the major pharmaceutical manufacturing company Johnson & Johnson.

Recently, there have been numerous Tylenol lawsuits filed after people suffered from liver failure. Allegedly, McNeil Consumer Healthcare was aware of the drugs risk of causing acute liver failure due to its toxicity, or an overdose, and has failed to take the proper steps to warn consumers of its side effects.

If you or a family member has suffered from liver failure after using a Tylenol product, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses and damages. Our dangerous drug attorneys have a tremendous amount of sympathy for victims of dangerous medications, and will seek to obtain the compensation available to you.

Why Are People Filing Lawsuits Against Tylenol?

There are a number of complexities involved in each Tylenol lawsuit, which is one of the reasons it is so important to contact a lawyer experienced in dealing with dangerous drug lawsuits. In most cases, people injured by dangerous drugs may seek compensation for a number of different reasons. Some of the reasons an individual may seek compensation include:

  • Appropriate use of Tylenol has not been explained to medical providers
  • The risks of Tylenol are well-documented
  • The risks of Tylenol are well-known by the manufacturer
  • The safety of Tylenol has been over-promoted
  • Tylenol has design defects, which increase a person’s chance for acute liver failure
  • Tylenol has inadequate warnings, instructions, and labels
  • Tylenol has not been adequately tested

Where Have Tylenol Lawsuits Been Consolidated?

Due to the great amount of lawsuits filed, alleging that the over-the-counter product Tylenol has resulted in serious liver damage, and liver failure, Tylenol lawsuits have been consolidated into one single court. In April 2013, the lawsuits were consolidated into Pennsylvania federal court before a single judge in order to allow for more consistent rulings, to eliminate duplicate discoveries, and conserve the resources of parties involved. As of February 2014, there have been over 120 Tylenol lawsuits filed in federal court.
