About Yaz/Yasmin
Yaz is taken orally to prevent pregnancy and has been on the market since 2006. Yasmin is a similar drug used to prevent pregnancy and has been on the market since 2001. These drugs significantly increase the risk of developing blood clots in the lungs or legs. Blood clots in the lungs are called a pulmonary embolus and are considered most dangerous because they can be fatal. Blood clots in the legs are referred to as DVTs or deep vein thrombosis. They are also considered a serious health issue.
Research indicates that women who take Yaz may have as much as 75 percent greater risk of developing a blood clots as compared to women who use other forms of birth control.
On December 8, 2011, the FDA convened to review the conflicting data of numerous studies evaluating the risk of venous thromboembolic events (VTEs) associated with Yasmin, Yaz, and other combined oral contraceptives (COCs) that contain drospirenone (DRSP) as the progestin component. The FDA’s expert panel coted 21 to 5 that the current US labels for Bayer’s DRSP containing COC’s are currently inadequate and need more information concerning the increased risk of blood clots compared to older contraceptive pills. The FDA’s own study found a 75 percent increase in the risk.

Yaz
In 2008, the US Food and Drug Administration cited Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals for downplaying their ads. Yasmin

This popular birth control pill is administered via prescription, and has generated billion dollars in revenue since it entered the market. Unfortunately, users of Yasmin may experience an array of severe side effects. Some of these side effects may have even altered the course of one’s life. Similar to Yaz and Yasmin, Ocella has been linked to an array of side effects including:

- Vaginal Discharge
- Hair Loss
- Discolored Skin
Gianvi
In 2010, Gianvi was launched by Teva Pharmaceuticals, and is a generic version of Bayer’s Yaz birth control. The birth control pill includes drospirenone, which has been linked to a higher risk of serious side effects. Some of the side effects linked to Gianvi include:
- Stroke
- Heart Attack
- Pulmonary Embolism
- Deep Vein Thrombosis
- Gallbladder Disease
- Blood Clots
