Does Elmiron cause blindness?
The short answer is that available evidence indicates that Elmiron may cause blindness. The Elmiron blindness risk appears significant based on the 2020 study presented to the AAO. However, a definite, causal relationship between Elmiron and blindness has not yet been established. Researchers have stated that a connection exists and additional study is warranted.

What is Elmiron?
Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium, or PPS) is a prescription medication used primarily for treating interstitial cystitis, a condition that causes serious bladder pain and discomfort.
Elmiron is currently the only medication approved by the FDA to treat interstitial cystitis. However, there are a number of Elmiron alternatives that may be suitable for patients seeking relief from symptoms of interstitial cystitis.
The brand-name medication is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals. There is currently no generic equivalent available in U.S. pharmacies.
