Elmiron Blindness Risk: “Does Elmiron Cause Vision Loss?”

Riddle Brantley LLP   |  April 30, 2020   |

Does Elmiron cause blindness? In the wake of disturbing reports that the popular bladder medication Elmiron may cause eye damage, many patients are wondering: “Can I go blind from taking Elmiron?” In this blog post, we’ll break down what you need to know about potential Elmiron blindness and vision loss risk.

First, let’s take a look at the research.

Elmiron Blindness RiskIn a recent study presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO) annual meeting, researchers revealed some alarming findings about potential Elmiron eye damage, including blindness:

According to the researchers, “about one-quarter of patients with significant exposure to Elmiron showed definite signs of eye damage.”

The evidence showed, based on the long-term study, that Elmiron can cause blindness and vision loss, among other serious eye injuries, including:

According to a report, the researchers found that blindness and other eye injuries associated with Elmiron “could be mistaken for other retinal conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration or pattern dystrophy.”

Does Elmiron cause blindness?

Can Elmiron Cause BlindnessThe short answer is that available evidence indicates that Elmiron may cause blindness. The Elmiron blindness risk appears significant based on the 2020 study presented to the AAO. However, a definite, causal relationship between Elmiron and blindness has not yet been established. Researchers have stated that a connection exists and additional study is warranted.

The potentially Elmiron-caused injuries listed above can all result in serious eye conditions, including blindness. These eye conditions include but are not necessarily limited to:

Prior to these findings, Elmiron manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals did not list vision loss or blindness as potential side effects or risks of taking Elmiron.

What is Elmiron?

Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium, or PPS) is a prescription medication used primarily for treating interstitial cystitis, a condition that causes serious bladder pain and discomfort.

Elmiron is currently the only medication approved by the FDA to treat interstitial cystitis. However, there are a number of Elmiron alternatives that may be suitable for patients seeking relief from symptoms of interstitial cystitis.

The brand-name medication is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals. There is currently no generic equivalent available in U.S. pharmacies.
