Pharmacies File Opioid Lawsuit Against Doctors in Ohio
Major drug store chains have filed a lawsuit against hundreds of medical doctors in Ohio, claiming that they overprescribed painkillers and bear at least partial responsibility for the opioid epidemic.
These opioid lawsuits are just the latest in a series of legal action involving opioid manufacturers, distributors, pharmacies and, now, prescribing physicians.
Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, Walmart and other major drug store companies face thousands of opioid lawsuits alleging that their potential negligence contributed to the opioid epidemic.
According to the Washington Post, the recent lawsuit filed by these drug store chains contends that “doctors and other prescribers should have to pay some of the penalty if the drugstore chains are found liable at trial.”
Attorneys for the drug store chains slammed opioid lawsuit plaintiffs’ decision not to pursue legal action against prescribing physicians.
“In a misguided hunt for deep pockets, without regard to actual fault or liability, plaintiff has elected not to sue any of these other parties,” they said in a statement.
Manufacturers and Pharmacy Chains Faces Thousands of Opioid Lawsuits
Drug manufacturers like Purdue Pharma, Johnson & Johnson and Teva Pharmaceuticals have already been hit with multi-million-dollar jury verdicts in cases alleging them of similar negligence.
Pharmacy chains like Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid, however, have not yet seen their day in court. A major trial consolidating thousands of claims against these and other involved companies is currently pending in Cleveland. A judge is urging all sides to agree to what could be a multi-billion-dollar settlement before moving forward to trial.
According to the Washington Post, more than 400,000 people have died in opioid-involved overdoses in the last two decades alone.
