The use of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors called SSRIs has been linked to serious birth defects. These drugs have been used by physicians to treat depression, anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other phobias.
Women who took these drugs during the first trimester of pregnancy may have an increased risk of having their infants born with serious birth defects, especially heart defects. One study completed in 2005 indicated that some of these drugs like Paxil and Zoloft almost doubled the risk of birth defects of the heart in infants whose mothers took these drugs.
