Zantac Causes Cancer: True or False?
Does Zantac cause cancer? Alarming new evidence from the FDA and independent labs suggests that it might. Here’s what we know so far about whether Zantac causes cancer:
Zantac and Cancer: Is There a Link?
In late 2019, two independent labs separately confirmed that they had detected elevated levels of NDMA in Zantac and other drugs containing ranitidine (generic for Zantac). The FDA confirmed these findings shortly afterward. NDMA Is a naturally occurring chemical that is known to be carcinogenic, meaning it can cause cancer.
Whether or not Zantac causes cancer, therefore, may depend on the amount of NDMA contamination present.
In issuing several urgent warnings about Zantac cancer risk, the FDA advised that Zantac contains “unacceptable” levels of NDMA, indicating that the amount of NDMA detected in Zantac may cause cancer.
Nevertheless, it is important to note that tests have not established a direct causal link between Zantac and cancer. Yet the evidence strongly suggests that, potentially, NDMA-contaminated Zantac causes cancer.
These cancers may include:
- Kidney cancer
- Liver cancer
- Stomach cancer
- Esophageal cancer
- Colorectal cancer
- Intestinal cancer
- Brain cancer
- Thyroid cancer
- Throat/nasal cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Lung cancer (if never smoked)
- Leukemia
- Breast cancer
