Big Pharma “Bayer” Discontinues ESSURE Birth Control
Pharmaceutical company Bayer announced on Friday, July 20, 2018, that they are officially discontinuing sales of ESSURE birth control; eliminating all sales and distribution of the product after December 31, 2018.
This announcement comes shortly after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began taking steps towards limiting sales of ESSURE to doctors back in April 2018.
ESSURE, as of today, has been linked to more than 10,000 reports of serious injuries including perforation (punctures) to the uterus and fallopian tubes, device migration, and accidental pregnancies.
What Is ESSURE?
ESSURE is a permanent birth-control device originally created by Conceptus, Inc and approved by the FDA in 2002. The device was developed as a non-surgical alternative to tubal ligation (having one’s tubes tied) for women who did not wish to have any more children. It consists of two metal coils that are inserted into the fallopian tubes through a woman’s cervix. Pregnancy is prevented as the metal coils provoke an inflammatory response and scar tissue grows around the device.
Since hitting the market, there have been thousands of reports of injuries caused by this device. In many cases, these have been serious injuries leading to infections and even death. The worst part is the procedure is irreversible.
What’s Wrong with ESSURE Birth Control?
There are many side effects to having the ESSURE birth control device and most are due to the fact that the inserts contain nickel-titanium, a material that can cause allergic reactions. Once the inserts are placed in the body, they release nickel into the tubes and patients who are allergic can have a serious reaction. Symptoms of a reaction can include rash, itching, and hives.
There are, however, other side effects and complications to this device, including:
- Fatigue
- Abdominal Pain
- Migraine Headaches
- Weight Fluctuations
- Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
- Device Breakage/Migration
- Autoimmune Diseases
- Accidental Pregnancy
- Hysterectomy
What Should I Do If I Am Injured by ESSURE?
If you’ve used ESSURE birth control and have experienced serious complications or side effects, you could be entitled to compensation. The product was originally marketed as safe and effective, preventing the need for permanent surgery but through studies and the recent news of discontinuing sales of the product, this may not be true.
Bayer has acknowledged that their device can cause various complications for women. The product has put users at risk of chronic pains, illnesses, and infections.
