Metformin Recalls and FDA Investigation
After independent lab testing by the online pharmacy Valisure found NDMA in numerous samples of Metformin manufactured by 11 different drug companies, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began testing Metformin for NDMA. In the wake of initial lab results and the FDA’s announcement in September 2019, many manufacturers have issued voluntary Metformin recalls. A comprehensive list of current Metformin recalls can be found on the FDA’s website.
In light of these developments, Riddle & Brantley’s experienced Metformin cancer lawyers have begun investigating these claims. What is NDMA?
NDMA (N-nitrosodimethylamine) is a naturally occurring chemical that is classified as a “probable carcinogen” by various health organizations and regulatory agencies, meaning that it may cause cancer in humans.
NDMA, the potentially cancer-causing contaminant found in Metformin, has been classified as a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), among others.
Metformin is the latest of several drugs in which potentially cancer-causing NDMA has been found. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against manufacturers of Zantac, alleging that NDMA contamination in Zantac causes cancer.
“The public definitely should be concerned about the rapidly growing discovery of carcinogens in medications, especially in those that are taken on a daily basis where even small contaminations can add up over time.”
-David Light, CEO of Valisure
Does Metformin Cause Cancer?
While a causal relationship between Metformin and cancer has not yet been established, independent testing has found NDMA contamination in Metformin, and NDMA is a probable carcinogen. To be clear, those who have taken Metformin may be at higher risk of developing cancer.
IMPORTANT: Patients taking Metformin are encouraged to talk with their prescribing doctor about potential cancer risks associated with Metformin. Those who have been diagnosed with cancer after taking Metformin may be entitled to compensation.
