Metformin and NDMA Contamination

Does Metformin Cause Pancreatic Cancer - Riddle & BrantleyIn late 2019, an independent lab named Valisure discovered levels of NDMA (N-Nitrosodimethylamine) in Metformin. NDMA is a dangerous, naturally occurring chemical that is known to cause cancer. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) all consider NDMA as “probable carcinogenic.”

This means that NDMA may cause cancer in humans, including pancreatic cancer.

In response to these findings, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about Metformin and potential cancer risk and launched its own investigation. Voluntary Metformin recalls followed.

Metformin and Pancreatic Cancer: What’s the Risk?

To be clear, no research has drawn a definitive link between Metformin and pancreatic cancer, however, based on known NDMA contamination, potential Metformin pancreatic cancer risk is likely.

Recent scientific evidence shows a clear link between NDMA (the dangerous chemical found in Metformin) and cancers of the digestive tract, including pancreatic cancer.

NDMA and Pancreatic Cancer

A 2003 study found that “Many features of the evidence … of pancreatic cancer appear to support connections with N-nitroso compounds [including NDMA].”

In a related dangerous drug case, many plaintiffs have filed lawsuits against Zantac alleging that NDMA in the popular heartburn medication causes pancreatic cancer. Our firm is actively investigating these claims, as well.
