Does Elmiron cause eye damage?
New research has raised alarming questions about the common bladder medication Elmiron. According to a recent study, Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate) was linked to eye damage in roughly a quarter of patients studied.
According to a report presented before the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Elmiron appears to be “toxic to the retina” — the light-sensing tissue in the back of the eye that enables us to see.
The researchers reported that “about one-quarter of patients with significant exposure to Elmiron showed definite signs of eye damage.”
The researchers responsible for the report further discovered that “this medication toxicity could masquerade as other known retinal conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration or pattern dystrophy.”
Damaging side effects and eye conditions potentially caused by Elmiron include:
Any of these conditions may potentially result in the following injuries:
IMPORTANT: If you have experienced any of these potential Elmiron side effects and/or suffered eye injury while taking Elmiron, it is recommended that you consult with your prescribing medical provider immediately.
What is Elmiron?
Elmiron is a popular medication that for decades has been used to treat bladder pain and discomfort associated with interstitial cystitis, a condition that causes bladder inflammation or irritation. Elmiron forms a thin layer of protectant on the bladder wall, reducing the effect of irritants and harmful substances in the urine on the bladder.
More than 1 million Americans are estimated to suffer from interstitial cystitis, and Elmiron is currently the only FDA-approved medication to treat the condition. There is currently no generic equivalent for the bladder medication.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans have likely been exposed to Elmiron.
