CPAP Machine Liver Cancer Risk

Do CPAP Machines Cause Liver Cancer?

That’s the question that millions are asking after Philips issued a recall of CPAP machines, BiLevel PAP machines, and mechanical ventilators due to a serious product defect. The company has warned that degrading foam in these CPAP machines can be inhaled or absorbed, potentially increasing the risk of cancer.

Philips CPAP Liver Cancer Risk - Riddle & BrantleyBased on the limited research available, it is apparent that defective CPAP machines may cause liver cancer, among other cancers including lung cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, rectal cancer, and many more.

Other injuries potentially caused by defective Philips CPAP machines, BiLevel PAP machines, and ventilators include kidney damage, liver damage, heart problems, and sudden respiratory failure.

Those using recalled Philips life-sustaining mechanical ventilators are advised to NOT stop using the device or altering therapy and instead immediately speak with their doctor.

How Might CPAP Machines Cause Liver Cancer?

The potential CPAP liver cancer risk is based on Philips’ announcement in June 2021 that recalled CPAP machines may cause cancer.

According to the manufacturer, sound-abatement foam in certain CPAP and BiLevel PAP machines, as well as certain mechanical ventilators, may degrade and could potentially be inhaled and enter users’ airways. The effects of inhalation of toxic foam particulate or gaseous Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) may include “Irritation (skin, eye, and respiratory tract), inflammatory response, headache, asthma, adverse effects to other organs (e.g. kidneys and liver) and toxic carcinogenic affects.” (bolding added for emphasis)

The potential increased risk of cancer due to toxic foam exposure and/or “chemical emissions” may include risk of liver cancer, among other types including kidney cancer, lung cancer, and rectal cancer.
