Can CPAP Machines Cause Lung Cancer?

That’s the question many are asking after Philips issued a recall for many of its CPAP machines and other ventilators due to health risks posed by degrading foam.

How Might CPAP Machines Cause Lung Cancer?

According to Philips’ announcement of the CPAP machine recall, certain CPAP machines, BiLevel PAP machines, and mechanical ventilators contain a foam material designed to minimize noise. The problem, however, is that this foam material can degrade into small, potentially toxic particles, which can be inhaled and irritate the airways, potentially causing lung cancer.

In its initial statement, the company said that “The potential risks of chemical exposure due to off-gassing include headache, irritation, hypersensitivity, nausea/vomiting, and possible toxic and carcinogenic effects.” (bolding has been added for emphasis)

Do CPAP Machines Cause Lung Cancer - Riddle & BrantleyPhilips added that it has received no reports of cancer caused by CPAP machines, including lung cancer caused by CPAP machines or other types of cancer, like kidney cancer, liver cancer, or rectal cancer.

We have more information about what CPAP machines have been recalled on our website.

The company has said that roughly 80 percent of the defective machines that may increase the risk of cancer are CPAP or BiLevel PAP machines, with the other 20 percent being mechanical ventilators.
