About Seymour Jonson AFB

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base took its name from Navy test pilot Seymour Johnson, a native of Goldsboro who was killed in a plane crash near Norbeck, MD on March 5, 1940.

The base is home to the 4th Fighter Wing of the Air Combat Command (ACC), which acts as the host wing for the installation; this has become one of the Air Force’s most distinguished fighter wings. The 4th Fighter Wing has been installed at Seymour Johnson AFB since December 1957.

The base occupies over 3,300 acres of land in southeastern Goldsboro, NC, and was original opened as Headquarters, Technical School, Army Air Forces Technical Training Command. A secondary mission was added in 1943, which included the preparation of men and officers for overseas duty.
