Tanning Beds Cause Over Three Thousand Injuries Each Year

Dan Brian   |  January 2, 2015   |

When clouds obscure the sun and keep temperatures low throughout the winter, tanning salons become a tempting way to inject a little sunshine into your life until spring rolls around.

It might seem like a good idea, but the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just released another 3,234 reasons you shouldn’t bother: Injuries.

The CDC says that each year, tanning beds cause more than three thousand people harm in various ways. From skin burns and eye injuries to radiation exposure that may lead to melanoma, tanning beds are simply not worth the risk.

This data may not even reflect the full spectrum of injuries experienced across the nation, as it is only indicative of those injuries treated in emergency rooms. Without accounting for outcomes like at-home burn or bruise care, or those treated in a physician’s office, there is no telling how widespread the problem truly is.

Other types of injuries the CDC reported including dizziness and fainting spells, lacerations, sprains, strains, and dislocations, not to mention the myriad ways UV radiation eventually wreaks havoc on the human body.

The attorneys at Riddle & Brantley strongly advise against visiting a tanning bed or salon this year. Despite its appeal during North Carolina’s chilly, grey winter months, you are sure to avoid some unnecessary injuries by simply skipping it.

Have you already been the victim of an injury at a tanning salon? If you believe that the harm you experienced was the result of another person’s negligence, you could have a valid personal injury claim.
