1st Paraquat Bellwether Trial Scheduled for Late 2022

Riddle Brantley LLP   |  May 17, 2022   |

Paraquat Lawsuits Will Go to Trial in November 2022

The first Paraquat "bellwether" trials are expected to begin in November 2022. These trials will likely influence the outcome of this litigation. In June of 2021, the Judicial Panel of Multidistrict Litigation in the Southern District of Illinois consolidated all Paraquat lawsuits filed against chemical manufacturer Syngenta into new multidistrict litigation (MDL). The first “bellwether” Paraquat trial has now been scheduled for November 15, 2022, which will give claimants and attorneys the first indicator of potential outcomes in these cases.

In MDLs, bellwether trials are used as “sample trials” to give indicators of how a jury will respond when presented with the case. After both the plaintiffs and the defendants evaluate the outcome of these bellwether trials, they may decide to settle all remaining cases or continue to try them in court.

Claimants and defendants alike will be watching this first Paraquat bellwether trial closely as they decide how to proceed.

IMPORTANT: Our firm is actively investigating claims that the popular weed killer (herbicide) paraquat causes Parkinson’s disease. If you believe you or a loved one may qualify for a Paraquat lawsuit, please call 1-800-525-7111 for a FREE, no-obligation consultation with an experienced product liability attorney at Riddle & Brantley.

What Do Paraquat Lawsuits Allege?

Syngenta manufactures and distributes the popular weed killer Paraquat (in addition to other paraquat manufacturers). In recent studies, Paraquat has been linked to an increased risk of Parkinson’s disease. Many people exposed to paraquat, including applicators, loaders, farm workers, and those living near farms spraying paraquat, may have developed Parkinson’s as a result of exposure to this dangerous chemical.

As more information has emerged about the potential link between Paraquat and Parkinson’s disease, hundreds of people have come forward with lawsuits against Paraquat manufacturers. These lawsuits claim that manufacturers downplayed the risks associated with paraquat herbicide and failed to take proper steps to protect people from potential harm associated with long-term use.

Paraquat MDL

Paraquat lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL). An MDL allows many similar cases with related claims to be brought under a single “umbrella” of litigation. In an MDL, bellwether trials are held to help plaintiffs and defendants decide how best to move forward to resolve a large number of lawsuits.

With the Paraquat lawsuits, over 600 cases were pending when they were consolidated into an MDL and moved to the Southern District of Illinois. We anticipate that many more paraquat lawsuits will be filed before these cases are resolved. Riddle & Brantley is actively representing clients in the paraquat litigation and we are ready to help however we can. Please call 1-800-525-7111 for a free, no-obligation consultation.
