Potential Enfamil Settlement Amounts
Enfamil, a popular baby formula line, has recently been at the center of several Enfamil baby formula lawsuits. These lawsuits allege bovine-based formulations put infants at a higher risk of developing a dangerous digestive disorder called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
Mead Johnson, the company that manufactures Enfamil, is facing lawsuits alongside competitor Abbott Laboratories, who manufactures the infant formula Similac. Consumers allege that these manufacturers downplayed the risks of their formulas for preterm infants and did not inform parents and physicians of the risk of NEC developing in preterm infants who were fed with the formula.
As with many lawsuits, there are no guarantees, and the range of potential settlement amounts that claimants might expect varies widely. So how much might you expect in a potential Enfamil lawsuit settlement?
IMPORTANT: To be clear, there have not been any Enfamil settlements as of mid-2022, and there are no guarantees that these cases will result in any settlement. Mead Johnson strongly denies any liability and/or wrongdoing in these cases.
Potential Enfamil Settlement Amounts
The current claims against Enfamil have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL), which is likely to result in one or more “bellwether” cases being brought before the presiding judge.
The outcome of these bellwether trials will help determine two things:
- Whether juries typically rule in favor of Mead Johnson (the defendant), or the plaintiffs.
- Whether an Enfamil settlement or other resolution will be reached before other, individual baby formula lawsuits go to trial.
If these bellwether cases do not result in settlement agreements or any verdicts for plaintiffs as expected, then judges may send cases back to their original U.S district courts to being individual trials instead.
The other important indicator that these bellwether cases will present is how much compensation juries may award to plaintiffs if they do win these Similac lawsuits. These amounts won’t guarantee future outcomes, but may provide a reasonable estimate for potential Similac settlement amounts going forward.
What Can We Learn from Similar Cases?
Other cases brought against big consumer manufacturing companies may also be good indicators of what kind of potential Similac settlement amounts claimants might expect. Here are a few examples of settlements from similar cases and their amounts:
Johnson & Johnson Talcum Powder (2020)
Johnson & Johnson recently agreed to pay out $100 million to settle 1,000+ cases alleging that their talc-based baby powder contained cancer-causing asbestos. What’s more, they are currently trying to avoid paying this settlement through an unusual legal maneuver called the “Texas two-step.” Under this scheme, talcum powder liabilities have been transferred into a new subsidiary company, which then filed for bankruptcy. If the bankruptcy filing is approved, it may allow Johnson & Johnson to avoid significant liability.
Roundup Weed Killer (2021)
Bayer has agreed to a global settlement with plaintiffs in lawsuits that claim the company did not properly warn consumers of cancer risks potentially associated with the popular weed killer Roundup. Bayer has settled roughly 80% of 125,000 claims brought against the company after it acquired Monsanto (the original Roundup manufacturer) last year. In total, Bayer expects to pay out approximately $11 billion in settlements once all the claims are completed. Legal analysts generally expect qualifying plaintiffs in Roundup cases to receive settlements in the range of $10,000 to $250,000, depending on the unique facts and circumstances of each case.
How Much Might Potential Enfamil Settlements Be Worth?
Based on legal analysis by leading experts and the above-mentioned settlements in similar product liability cases, it seems reasonable to estimate that qualifying plaintiffs in Enfamil baby formula lawsuits might expect somewhere in the range of $10,000 to $200,000 for an NEC claim supported by strong evidence. However, to be clear, this is simply an estimate based on what we know now. No settlements have been agreed to, and this litigation is developing rapidly. It is NOT certain that there will be any settlements in these cases, or that these lawsuits will resolve in favor of the plaintiffs.

Will You Qualify for a Potential Enfamil Settlement?
If your infant was fed cow’s milk-based Enfamil baby formula and later suffered from NEC, you may be entitled to compensation in the form of a potential jury award or settlement. To be clear, however, no Enfamil settlements have been agreed to, and Mead Johnson has vowed to vigorously defend itself in court.
