Bayer Sets Aside $4.5 Billion for Potential Roundup Settlements

Roundup Lawsuit Costs Continue to Pile Up for Bayer

Bayer Sets Aside Billions for Roundup Lawsuit Costs - Riddle & BrantleyBayer faces potentially massive costs in thousands of Roundup lawsuits. On July 29, the company announced that it was setting aside an additional $4.5 billion to cover the ongoing litigation and potential settlements and/or verdicts. Bayer has already set aside roughly $11 billion to cover expenses related to Roundup litigation.

The company is facing allegations by thousands of plaintiffs that Roundup weed killer causes cancer — in particular, non-Hodgkins lymphoma. In mid-2020, Bayer negotiated a global Roundup settlement that would distribute more than $10 billion among roughly 125,000 potential victims. Roughly 30,000 plaintiffs have yet to agree to the settlement terms, however.

With roughly $15 billion now set aside by Bayer for Roundup lawsuits, the litigation is already some of the most expensive in U.S. history.

IMPORTANT: While most Roundup lawsuits have already settled (or are in settlement negotiations), there is still time to file a Roundup claim provided the case meets certain criteria. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or chronic lymphocytic leukemia after exposure to Roundup, please call 1-800-525-7111 today for a free consultation.

Bayer to Appeal to Supreme Court

Separately, Bayer has announced that it will appeal a recent Roundup lawsuit verdict to the U.S. Supreme Court. The company hopes that a ruling in its favor will effectively bring an end to Roundup litigation nationwide.

“We believe that the U.S. Supreme Court should give strong consideration to accepting our petition … and render a positive ruling,” said Bayer CEO Werner Baumann.

Despite research linking glyphosate to cancer and numerous setbacks in court, Bayer continues to vigorously defend the safety of its Roundup herbicide products, and denies any negligence or wrongdoing.

Potential Roundup Settlement Amounts

There are never any guarantees, and the outcome of any case depends on its unique facts and circumstances, but legal analysts anticipate that potential settlements in Roundup cancer lawsuits may be significant. After the global settlement announcement in 2020, the New York Times reported that potential victims might receive settlements in the $5,000 to $250,000 range.
