Roundup Settlement Amounts: What Can Victims Expect?

Riddle Brantley LLP   |  June 26, 2020   |

In the wake of Bayer’s announcement that it will pay more than $10 billion to settle a majority of Roundup cancer lawsuits, many are asking about Roundup settlement amounts. Specifically, what kind of compensation might victims expect as part of the settlement?

IMPORTANT: The most important thing to remember is that there are never any guarantees when it comes to settlements. Not all claimants will receive compensation, and specific Roundup settlement amounts depends on many different factors including the unique facts and circumstances of each case.

That said, here’s what we know about the Roundup settlement amounts and what kind of compensation victims may be entitled to:

Roundup Settlement: More Than $10 Billion for Victims

While Roundup manufacturer Bayer admits no liability or wrongdoing as part of the recent settlement, the company has tentatively agreed to pay more than $10 billion to current and future claimants.

Roundup currently faces more than 120,000 claims and lawsuits alleging that Roundup weed killer causes non-Hodgkins lymphoma and other cancers.

Roundup Settlement Amount - What Can Victims Expect - Riddle & BrantleyThe recent Roundup settlement will pay as much as $9.6 billion to resolve victims involved in current litigation and set aside $1.25 billion to pay future claims as part of separate class-action lawsuits. The settlement is expected to cover roughly 95,000 cases, but at least 30,000 cancer victims have yet to agree to the terms.

In previous verdicts against Bayer and former Roundup manufacturer Monsanto (which was acquired by Bayer in 2018), juries have awarded victims more than $2.3 billion in damages. However, in at least one case, these damages were significantly reduced by a judge in later proceedings.

Roundup manufacturer Bayer maintains that its product is safe and does not cause cancer. Roundup contains the active ingredient glyphosate, which is classified as a “probable human carcinogen” by the WHO, meaning that it is likely it causes cancer.

Roundup Settlement Amounts: Potential Payouts for Victims

While it is unknown exactly how much compensation potential victims may be entitled to under the terms of the Roundup settlement, a New York Times report offers some potential ranges.

According to the New York Times, individuals who claim that exposure to Roundup caused their non-Hodgkins lymphoma or another type of cancer may receive payments between $5,000 and $250,000.

The exact amount of compensation awarded to Roundup cancer claimants will depend on the strength of their cases against the weed killer company. Some claimants will not receive compensation.

Have you suffered non-Hodgkins lymphoma or another type of cancer after exposure to Roundup weed killer?

You may be entitled to a Roundup settlement amount under the terms of the recent agreement. Now is the time to file a claim if you believe that Roundup weed killer caused your cancer.
