Are You Eligible for Disability Benefits?

The Social Security Administration considers a number of factors when deciding whether or not you are eligible for disability benefits.

This process typically focuses on 5 important questions:

  • Are you working? In order to qualify for disability benefits, you cannot earn more than $1,180 per month in wages.
  • How severe is your condition? Your condition must be severe enough to significantly interfere with your ability to perform work.
  • Is your disability on the SSA’s list of disabling conditions? The SSA maintains a list of conditions that automatically qualify a person for disability benefits if he or she meets certain other criteria.
  • Can you do the same work? You may qualify for benefits if your condition does not permit you to perform any of the type of work you’ve done for the past 15 years, provided you meet certain additional criteria.
  • Can you do any other kind of work? The SSA considers whether or not your disability permits you to do work of a different type than you have done in the past.

Types of Social Security Disability Benefits

A variety of Social Security Disability benefits are available. These include:

Disability Insurance Benefits (SSD or SSDI)

These benefits are the most commonly sought-after, and cover those with a history of working who are now disabled. In general, adults become eligible for SSD or SSDI benefits after working for at least 5 of the last 10 years. In certain circumstances, families with children with disabilities can also qualify for benefits.

Disabled Adult Child Benefits (DAC)

If a child between the ages of 18 and 22 has a disability, he or she may qualify for disability benefits if the parent(s) receive Social Security retirement benefits or Social Security Disability benefits themselves, or they are deceased.

Disabled Widow or Widower (DWB)

Widows or widowers who have lost a spouse and are greater than 50 years of age may qualify for benefits if they develop a disability within seven years of their spouse’s death. In these cases, the widow or widower must have been married to the deceased for at least 10 years in order to be eligible.

In certain situations, Social Security death benefits are also available to the children of a deceased parent.
