What is a Penumbra JET 7 Xtra Flex Cather?

The Penumbra JET 7 Xtra Flex is a catheter used in a procedure called a thrombectomy to remove blood clots in the brain in stroke patients. Thrombectomies are relatively routine procedures for stroke patients, but the Penumbra catheter has been linked to serious injuries including brain damage, blood vessel damage, coma, stroke (cerebral infarction), and death.

Penumbra Recall

In December 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an urgent recall of Penumbra JET 7 Reperfusion Catheters with Xtra Flex Technology (JET 7 Xtra Flex).

According to the FDA, the Penumbra catheter can cause serious injury or death when used for removing clots in stroke patients.

Penumbra catheters affected by the recall include:

  • JET 7 Xtra Flex catheter
  • JET 7MAX configuration (which includes the JET 7 Xtra Flex and MAX Delivery Device)

The Penumbra recall does not include the Penumbra JET 7 Reperfusion Catheter with Standard Tip.

Medical providers are advised by the FDA to immediately stop use of the Penumbra JET 7 Xtra Flex catheter and Penumbra JET 7MAX configuration.
