Depo-Provera Lawsuit Update: What Victims Need to Know

As of early summer 2025, the federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) for Depo-Provera lawsuits is gaining momentum. According to reports, more than 400 cases have been centralized in the Northern District of Florida under Judge M. Casey Rodgers. Plaintiffs allege the birth control shot caused them to develop serious brain tumors known as intracranial meningiomas, particularly with long-term use. Research suggests that spinal tumors may also be linked to Depo-Provera.

Riddle & Riddle continues to actively investigate these claims against Depo-Provera and we are ready to help however we can. For a free, no-obligation case review, please call 1-800-525-7111 or contact us via website chat.

Background on Depo-Provera Lawsuits

The lawsuits claim that Depo-Provera’s active ingredient, depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), increases the risk of meningiomas — noncancerous but potentially dangerous brain tumors. Studies indicate the risk may be up to five times higher for women who used the shot for several years. Plaintiffs allege that the manufacturers, including Pfizer, failed to adequately warn patients and doctors about this risk.

IMPORTANT: Defendants in these lawsuits strongly deny any liability and/or wrongdoing, and there is no guarantee that Depo-Provera lawsuits will result in any settlement(s) and/or judgment(s) favorable to plaintiffs.

Status of the MDL

MDL No. 3140 was established in February 2025 to coordinate pretrial proceedings for the growing number of Depo-Provera cases. Since then, the litigation has rapidly expanded, with over 300 new cases added between March and May. As of the latest case management conference, there are more than 400 active lawsuits in the MDL.

Key Facts and Developments

  • Defendants have produced nearly 1 million documents totaling over 8 million pages.
  • Discovery is underway and focused on issues like causation, product labeling, and FDA preemption.
  • The court is evaluating whether generic drugmakers like Greenstone, Viatris, and Prasco should remain in the litigation.
  • Some generics may be dismissed from the MDL, though brand-name manufacturers may remain fully involved.

Bellwether Trials

Judge Rodgers has indicated that five bellwether cases will be selected for early trials, expected in late 2026 or early 2027. These trials are meant to test the strength of the claims and potentially guide future settlements, though their outcomes won’t directly impact other cases.

State Lawsuits

While the MDL is proceeding in federal court, other lawsuits have been filed at the state level, including in Indiana and Massachusetts. In Pennsylvania, a mass tort program for Depo-Provera has stalled, with only one case remaining after coordination was withdrawn.
