The research and safety practices of Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup weed-killer, have been brought into question after a federal court unsealed documents earlier this month. Per The New York Times, the documents, which are related to ongoing litigation regarding the Roundup cancer risk issue, included internal emails and emails between Monsanto and federal regulators.
What Did the Emails Reveal About Roundup’s Cancer Risk?
We have been discussing the discovery that Roundup may cause non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer on our blog for the past couple of weeks. The report in the Times seems confirm the Roundup cancer risk allegations. In the article, it is revealed that the emails the court unsealed showed that Monsanto may have ghostwritten academic research on the Roundup cancer risk. In addition, emails allegedly reveal that a senior Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official may have helped stop a US Department of Health review of glyphosate, which is Roundup’s primary ingredient.
Another revelation from the emails showed that an EPA official tipped off Monsanto about the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s determination that glyphosate posed a cancer risk in time for the chemical company to prepare a public relations attack on the finding.
While the researchers have not definitively declared glyphosate as a cancer risk, the fact that Monsanto and some EPA officials have possibly worked behind the scenes to sabotage research is disturbing. An MDL has been formed for those who have suffered non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and believe Roundup is to blame.
