Durham Car Accident Data

Between 2021 and 2023, a total of 37,109 car accidents occurred in the city of Durham, more than the cities of Greensboro and Asheville and only slightly fewer than Winston-Salem. Together, these wrecks led to 74 deaths and 6,883 injuries. On average, the greater Durham County area experiences 34 traffic fatalities and 3,736 injuries each year.

Durham County Commercial Motor Vehicle Crashes

Large trucks, buses, and semis were involved in approximately 328 accidents in Durham County in 2023.

  • 106 accidents involved a tractor-trailer combination vehicle
  • 97 wrecks involved a single-unit truck with three or more axles
  • 65 crashes involved a commercial bus
  • 52 collisions involved a school bus
  • Eight accidents involved a fire truck

The county’s sole commercial motor vehicle (CMV) fatality accident involved a commercial bus. Fifty-four other CMV accidents resulted in injuries to one or more people involved.

Approximately 2.45 percent of Durham motor vehicle accidents are due to alcohol impairment. In other words, of all the crashes that occurred within Durham city limits between 2021 and 2023, an average of 301 per year involved a driver under the influence of alcohol. Durham County averages 11 traffic fatalities and 232 injuries per year due to drunk driving.    

In 2023, speed contributed to 23 percent of all traffic fatalities statewide. Speeding includes exceeding a street or highway’s posted speed limit as well as traveling so fast that you cannot safely turn or stop your car suddenly if necessary.
