What Are Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently reported that 82,528 motorcyclists were injured in 2020, and motorcycle accidents accounted for 14% of highway fatalities.
Many accidents in North Carolina stem from negligent motorists at an intersection who turn left in front of oncoming motorcycles. In most cases, these drivers did not accurately gauge their speed. In fact, most motorcycle collisions occur at intersections.
Additional motorcycle accident causes include the following:
- Alcohol and drug use. Motorists who are under the influence have decreased reaction times.
- Speeding does not allow adequate time to respond to a change in traffic patterns or obstacles on the road.
- Mechanical problems can include defective brakes or tires.
- Inclement weather, such as snow, ice, or heavy rainfall, reduces visibility.
- Poor roadway conditions, which could include potholes and obscured signage.
- Distracted drivers who are paying more attention to their GPS or their cell phones.
Finally, lane splitting, also known as white-lining, can be dangerous and increase the chances of an accident.
Alcohol and drug use
Alcohol use is still one of the significant causes of motorcycle crashes. According to the NHTSA, nearly 30% of bikers in fatal motorcycle accidents involved motorists whose blood-alcohol level exceeded the legal limit. Injuries caused by a drunk driver are far more likely to generate long-term or fatal injuries.
As noted above, getting behind the wheel while intoxicated impairs crucial driving skills such as reaction time, vision, coordination, and judgment.
Failure to check blind spots
Because of their relatively small size, motorcycles can be easily hidden in a car's blind spots or difficult to see as light or weather conditions change. If a motorist doesn't see a motorcyclist who is approaching, it's challenging to avoid colliding with them.
Visibility is a significant issue for bikers as accidents often inflict severe damage. In addition, as noted, poor visibility may also be exacerbated by bad weather and dangerous road conditions, (e.g., ongoing construction).

Results for Motorcycle Accident Injury Victims
The consequences of a motorcycle accident can last a lifetime. In addition to physical injuries, victims often suffer emotional trauma and have to deal with the challenges of expensive medical bills and changes to their quality of life.
In more than three decades serving the people of North Carolina, our motorcycle accident lawyers have recovered millions of dollars in compensation for injured victims (see disclaimer below). We’re proud of the many settlements and verdicts we’ve won on behalf of our deserving clients, including:
- $1,000,000 — Our client was a passenger on a motorcycle whose driver lost control in a sharp curve. Our client was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The driver was found to be at fault in the accident and our attorneys were able to negotiate a $1 million settlement with the insurance company.
- $300,000 — Our client was riding a motorcycle when he was T-boned by another vehicle. A comprehensive accident investigation organized by Riddle & Brantley determined the driver of the other vehicle to be liable, and we filed a claim. We were ultimately able to negotiate a settlement of $300,000 in total compensation for the victim.
- $1,000,000 — A motorcycle rider was thrown 15 feet from his bike when he was hit by another vehicle that did not have the right of way at an intersection. The driver of the truck was charged and found guilty in the case and we filed a separate civil claim, securing $1,000,000 in total compensation for our deserving client.
