Is Paraquat Used on Golf Courses?

Paraquat has been used on golf courses, however paraquat use on golf courses is currently banned. This means, however, that golf course groundskeepers, golfers, and those living near golf courses may have been exposed to a potentially dangerous herbicide that has been linked to Parkinson’s disease.

While many golf courses previously used paraquat as a weed killer, today the chemical is classified as a “Restricted Use” herbicide by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and paraquat use by golf courses is prohibited.

What is Paraquat?

Paraquat is a powerful herbicide (weed killer) that has been used in U.S. agriculture since the 1960s. In recent years, paraquat has become more popular due to health risks and lawsuits surrounding Roundup.

Paraquat is typically sprayed manually (using a “backpack” or handheld sprayer) or applied by a tractor equipped to spray herbicide. In some cases, paraquat may be sprayed by a crop duster.

In recent years, scientific evidence has linked paraquat to Parkinson’s disease, and thousands of Paraquat lawsuits have been filed alleging that the herbicide causes Parkinson’s disease. Please note, however, that at this time, we cannot accept cases concerning Parkinson’s disease potentially linked to exposure to paraquat on golf courses. We can only accept Paraquat claims related to exposure at agricultural sites.

Paraquat exposure may occur due to skin contact and absorption, ingestion, or inhalation. Agricultural workers and those in rural areas may also be exposed due to paraquat drift or overspray.

How is Paraquat Used on Golf Courses?

As an effective weed killer, paraquat has historically been used by golf courses in groundskeeping. Today, however, paraquat use is banned on golf courses by the EPA. The powerful herbicide is classified as a “Restricted Use” chemical and applicators must be licensed.

Who May Be Exposed to Paraquat Used by Golf Courses?

Those potentially at risk due to paraquat exposure at and around golf courses include:

  • Golf course groundskeepers
  • Golf course staff
  • Golfers
  • Those living near golf courses potentially exposed to paraquat drift or runoff

***IMPORTANT: At this time, we can only accept claims related to Paraquat exposure at agricultural sites. We are unfortunately unable to accept claims related to Paraquat exposure on golf courses.
