Is There a Way to Avoid a Head-On Car Crash?

Earlier this month, The Pilot reported on an incident involving a fatal head-on car accident that happened on NC 211 in Moore County. The deadly crash took place around 2:45 pm on a Thursday on NC 211 near Puckett Lane and involved three vehicles. Reportedly, leading up to the wreck, a 69-year-old man was driving a Chevrolet truck south on NC 211 when he crossed over the center line and crashed into Jeep Wrangler heading north.

In addition to hitting the Jeep, the Chevy struck a Honda CRV. The 57-year-old man who was driving the Jeep was trapped in his vehicle following the wreck. He died at the accident scene. The driver of the truck died after suffering cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital. The woman driving the CRV escaped the crash with only non-life-threatening injuries.

What Can I Do to Avoid a Head-On Car Accident?

The Safe America Foundation released a few tips to help drivers avoid head-on crashes, such as:

  • If possible, swerve to the right – If a driver is heading the wrong way, it’s often because he or she is drugged or drunk driving. In such cases, the driver may immediately try to get into the left lane thinking it’s the right lane, because he or she wants to avoid getting pulled over for speeding. Therefore, your best bet may be to swerve right to avoid the head-on crash.
  • Signal – Using your turn signals and making it perfectly clear which direction you will be swerving in may help alert the other driver to swerve in the opposite direction to avoid a head-on collision.
  • Keep Your Eyes Ahead – In addition to watching the road immediately in front of you as you drive, you should try to look further down the road during light traffic. It can help you to see issues, such as a wrong-way driver, early enough to avoid the problem without incident.
  • Check the Reflectors – If the reflectors on the road are white or yellow, then you are driving in the right direction. If the reflectors are red, then you are driving the wrong way and need to pull off the road and turn around.
  • Report the Wrong-way Drivers – If you are able to avoid a head-on crash, pull over and call 911. Reporting a wrong-way driver to the police may help them stop him or her before their reckless driving leads to an auto accident.
