About scott
Scott A. Scurfield is a personal injury and Social Security disability attorney based in Raleigh, NC. Scott is a Certified Specialist in Social Security and is the leader of the Social Security disability team at the law offices of Riddle & Brantley.
In addition to representing Social Security disability claimants in hearings before federal Administrative Law Judges, he represents veterans in their claims for VA benefits. He is also part of the plaintiff’s personal injury practice at our law firm, representing many of our motor vehicle accident and premises liability clients.
“The advice I give you might not be what you want to hear,” he says. “But it is what you need to hear.”
Education and Professional Experience
Scott graduated from Berlin Brothersvalley High School in 1981 (salutatorian) and then the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in 1985 with a Business/Economics degree (magna cum laude). He went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and graduated in 1988. Scott passed the bar exam that same year.
Prior to joining our firm, Scott has enjoyed a remarkably broad legal career. This included being appointed as an Assistant Public Defender for Somerset County in 1992. He also practiced bankruptcy law, family, and domestic law as well as civil litigation as a private attorney in Pennsylvania. As a court-appointed Hearing Officer, he presided over hearings to determine the proper placement settings for at-risk children placed in foster care by Children & Youth Services of Somerset County.
Bar Admissions and Professional Memberships
Scott is a Board Certified Specialist in Social Security Disability Law; to become a specialist, an attorney must meet the rigorous certification requirements set out by the North Carolina State Bar Board of Legal Specialization.
He is also licensed and admitted to practice law in all North Carolina state and federal courts, as well as the state and federal courts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the North Carolina and Wake County Bar Associations.
In addition, he is a member of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, an organization that has been committed to protecting the rights of individuals in the state for over 50 years. Scott is also a member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives. This specialized bar association works to ensure that those seeking Social Security disability benefits receive the best representation possible.
Social Security Disability Attorney with a Commitment to Injury Victims
Scott has been practicing law for more than 30 years. He has spent the last six focusing primarily on Social Security disability and personal injury. He also handles the veterans’ disability practice at Riddle & Brantley, assisting former servicemen and women get the VA benefits they deserve.
According to Scott, being a lawyer allows him to fix problems, bring order to messes and above all, help people. In the past, he worked on the other side of the courtroom, representing insurance companies. However, after almost a decade, Scott decided to make a change to plaintiffs’ work, which is much more personally fulfilling.
For Scott, hiring an attorney for a Social Security disability claim or any personal injury case is essential. He advises against handling these cases yourself “for the same reasons most people don’t repair their own cars; there is no substitute for knowledge and experience.”
