Common Types of Truck Accidents
When large commercial vehicles collide with passenger cars or trucks, the resulting injuries are often severe. It is important to keep in mind that not all truck accidents are the same, and some types of collisions are more likely than others to have catastrophic consequences.
If you or someone you love suffers an injury in a truck accident, our firm could help you understand how that accident happened. This process will involve determining the type of accident that occurred. Some of the types of accidents we handle include the following:
1. Jackknife Accidents
A jackknife truck accident is unique to tractor trailer vehicles. These commercial truck accidents occur when a driver loses control, causing the trailer to fold in against the cab of the truck. The accident earned its name by resembling a folding knife when viewing it from above.
2. Overweight Accidents
There are weight limits that apply to commercial trucks, and federal law requires truckers to strictly comply with these regulations. Those that fail to do so could be putting other motorists at risk.
Commercial trucks that are overweight are more difficult to bring to a stop. They require more space and time than normal vehicles to slow down, increasing the risk of a collision with a stopped vehicle in front of them.
Overweight accidents can also cause serious physical injuries. The force caused by a collision with a large truck is always significant. Additional weight will only increase the damage that can occur.
3. Rollover Accidents
A rollover crash can happen for different reasons. In general, these accidents occur when a truck driver loses control of the vehicle, slides sideways, and rolls end-over-end. This can happen when a truck hits a patch of ice or attempts to take a sharp turn.
Rollover accidents have the potential to cause extensive damage to multiple vehicles. Often, rollover crashes take up multiple lanes of traffic. That means each of the vehicles in these lanes could be in the path of a rolling tractor trailer.
4.Rear-End Collisions
The most common type of truck crash is the rear-end collision. These accidents happen when a commercial truck driver fails to slow down in time to avoid colliding with the vehicle in front of them.
The most common location for these accidents is at a stop light or intersection. Often, drivers cause these accidents when they are distracted or impaired.
5. Falling Debris Accidents
Not all truck accidents involve a commercial truck directly striking another vehicle. In some cases, these accidents involve an object or part falling from the truck and striking a vehicle behind it. This could include pieces of the trailer that are not securely fastened or objects falling from the back of a truck.
Even when these falling objects do not strike another vehicle, a motorist’s attempt to swerve out of the way could result in a dangerous crash if that driver overcorrects.
