If you have been taking Metformin to control you type 2 diabetes and you have been later diagnosed with certain cancers, you may be asking yourself “Does metformin cause cancer?”
NDMA in Metformin and Potential Cancer Risk
While there is not yet a conclusive link between metformin and cancer, the FDA discovered the presence of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in 76 lots of metformin drugs and because of this has issued a voluntary recall order for these metformin products.
NDMA is known to cause cancer. It is actually used to cause cancer in rats in laboratory tests.
Other drugs such as Zantac have been recalled due to the presence of NDMA and its probable link to many cancers. In lab tests, NDMA was found to consistently cause cancer in mice and is considered very dangerous when high doses are ingested. The FDA and other independent researchers have suggested that “sustained higher levels of exposure may increase the risk of cancer in humans."
Exposure to NDMA has been linked to up to 20 different types of cancer including:
- Throat and nasal cancer
- Esophageal cancer
- Stomach cancer
- Bladder cancer
- Liver cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
- Intestinal cancer
- Brain cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Testicular cancer
- Thyroid cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Non-Hodgkins lymphoma
- Leukemia
- Multiple myeloma
- Lung cancer
These links make clear that Metformin contaminated with NDMA may cause cancer. Patients wondering, "Does Metformin cause cancer?" are advised to talk with their doctor about the potential cancer risk associated with Metformin.

Was My Cancer Caused by Metformin?
Due to the presence of above-acceptable levels of NDMA found in many metformin products, if you have taken metformin you may be at an increased risk for cancer.
The FDA states that “Nitrosamine impurities may increase the risk of cancer if people are exposed to them at above acceptable levels over long periods of time.”
Due to these findings, the FDA has issued voluntary recalls on metformin products in which it has found above acceptable levels of NDMA present in samples.
If you were not at risk for certain cancers prior to taking a metformin product that has tested positive for elevated levels of NDMA, and you later developed cancer, you may qualify for a metformin cancer claim.
IMPORTANT: The FDA advises that “Patients taking recalled metformin should continue taking it until a doctor or pharmacist gives them a replacement or a different treatment option. It could be dangerous for patients with type 2 diabetes to stop taking their metformin without first talking to their health care professional.”
Other NDMA-contaminated products such as Zantac have been the subject of class action lawsuits due to the possible link between NDMA exposure and cancer. These lawsuits followed a similar FDA recall for ranitidine products found to contain elevated levels of NDMA similar to those found in metformin.
