Beginning in 2018, studies have shown irreversible vision problems associated with long-term use of the medication Elmiron.
In a recent Elmiron eye damage study, researchers reported that roughly one-quarter of participants who were taking Elmiron showed symptoms of serious and irreversible eye damage, including retinopathy, maculopathy and blindness.
Elmiron may cause damage to the part of the retina called the macula, causing vision problems. The kind of maculopathy linked to Elmiron is called pigmentary maculopathy. According to several studies, this type of maculopathy appears to be unique to those who have used Elmiron.

In March 2020, Kimberly Pelczar filed a lawsuit against Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. and Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals claiming vision loss after using Elmiron.
Pelczar began using the popular drug Elmiron in 2005 and in 2015 began to have eye problems. She started seeking medical attention in 2015. In 2019 Pelczar was diagnosed with permanent retinal injury and vision loss, potentially due to the toxicity of Elmiron.
The plaintiff’s complaint stated that manufacturers failed to warn doctors and the public that Elmiron may cause vision problems. The lawsuit claims the drug makers actively hid the side effects from the public.
