100 Billion Pain Pills: Report Casts Alarming New Light on Opioid Crisis
More than 100 billion doses prescription painkillers oxycodone and hydrocodone were shipped throughout the United States from 2006 to 2014, according to disturbing new data from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
The report was released by the government following an extensive legal challenge by The Washington Post and the Charleston Gazette-Mail.
During the period covered by the report, more than 130,000 people died from painkiller overdoses. In the last two decades, more than 400,000 people have died of opioid-involved overdoses in the opioid epidemic in the United States, according to reports by The Washington Post.
Lawsuits Allege Wrongdoing by Opioid Manufacturers, Distributors and Pharmacies
Thousands of lawsuits against opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies are currently pending in federal courts.
“In excess of 100 billion pills is simply jaw-dropping,” said Peter J. Mougey, an attorney representing plaintiffs in opioid lawsuits in Florida.
The DEA data confirms that six companies distributed the vast majority of painkillers as the opioid epidemic intensified: McKesson, Walgreens, Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen, CVS, and Walmart.
Each of these distributors faces serious allegations of negligence, including that they ignored suspicious drug orders.

Opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies are alleged to have downplayed serious health risks, engaged in deceptive marketing and even shipped painkillers while ignoring signs of suspicious drug orders.
We believe that if these allegations are true, that’s wrong and these opioid companies must be held accountable for their potential negligence.
