Missouri Appeals Court Upholds $611 Million Roundup Verdict: What It Means for You

A Missouri appeals court has upheld a massive $611 million jury verdict against Bayer’s Monsanto unit in a case involving Roundup weed killer. This decision is a major development in the ongoing legal battle over glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, and its alleged link to cancer, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). While Bayer continues to deny wrongdoing, the ruling offers encouragement for individuals who believe they may have been harmed by the product.

This post breaks down what the court’s decision means, how it affects consumers and victims, and what legal options may still be available.

The Court’s Decision

In May 2025, the Missouri Court of Appeals rejected Bayer’s appeal, which challenged how evidence was presented during trial and whether federal pesticide law protects the company from state-level lawsuits. The court found that jurors were appropriately allowed to consider scientific evidence and regulatory opinions that questioned the safety of glyphosate.

Bayer had argued that federal law should shield it from these lawsuits because the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) did not require a cancer warning on Roundup’s label. However, the appeals court said that states can still hold companies accountable under their own failure-to-warn laws.

What This Means for Other Victims

This ruling may impact thousands of pending lawsuits across the country. The decision reinforces the idea that federal pesticide labeling does not necessarily override a person’s right to sue under state law. It also signals that courts may continue to allow expert testimony and research that raise concerns about Roundup’s safety.

It’s important to note that while many plaintiffs allege that long-term exposure to Roundup caused non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or other cancers, these claims remain legally and scientifically contested. Monsanto and Bayer have consistently denied that glyphosate causes cancer, and regulatory agencies like the EPA continue to approve its use. However, several juries in recent years have sided with victims and awarded large verdicts.

IMPORTANT: The legal claims and alleged health risks associated with glyphosate remain under dispute. Not all courts or jurisdictions agree, and potential scientific evidence has been disputed by defendants. These lawsuits do not prove causation in every case.

A Closer Look at the $611 Million Verdict

The original case was brought by three plaintiffs who claimed they developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using Roundup for years. In 2023, a Cole County jury awarded them $61 million in compensatory damages and $549.9 million in punitive damages. Bayer appealed the verdict, but the Missouri court has now upheld the ruling.

With interest added, the total judgment now exceeds $700 million. Bayer may continue to seek review by higher courts, but for now, the verdict stands.

Why This Matters to Consumers Nationwide

This case is just one of many in a broader legal fight over Roundup’s safety. While Bayer has settled many claims, thousands more remain unresolved. The Missouri court’s decision may influence future lawsuits and give victims hope that their cases will be taken seriously.

Here’s what this means for consumers:

  • State-level lawsuits remain a viable path, even if federal law doesn’t require certain warnings.
  • Courts may continue to allow a wide range of scientific evidence to be presented.
  • Large verdicts are still possible in certain jurisdictions.
  • Legal outcomes will continue to vary case by case

If you or a loved one has used Roundup and been diagnosed with a serious illness, particularly non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) or chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), you may still be eligible to file a claim. Each case depends on specific facts, and legal outcomes are never guaranteed, but recent developments suggest that these cases are still very much active.
