Exactech Lawsuit for Defective Knee, Hip, and Ankle Implants

Exactech Knee, Hip, and Ankle Insert / Implant Failure Lawsuits

If you've been implanted with an Exactech knee, ankle, or hip insert and experience health problems or revision surgery, you may qualify for a lawsuit.Certain Exactech knee inserts (also known as implants), hip inserts, and ankle inserts have been linked to serious health problems, including bone loss, lysis (cell disintegration), pain, and component fracturing / cracking. In some cases, these complications may require additional, corrective surgery to replace the faulty implants. Exactech lawsuits are being filed in response by many plaintiffs, seeking compensation for injuries, medical expenses, pain and suffering, wage loss, and more.

IMPORTANT: If you’ve been implanted with a potentially degrading Exactech knee, hip, or ankle insert (implant) and were later diagnosed with bone loss, lysis, or pain, or you were required to have corrective / replacement surgery, you may be entitled to an Exactech lawsuit. Please call 1-800-525-7111 for a free, no-obligation consultation with an experienced Exactech lawsuit attorney at Riddle & Brantley. Exactech Recall

Exactech joint implant lawsuits were prompted by a major, voluntary Exactech recall issued in February 2022, which was later expanded. The recall includes “all knee and ankle arthroplasty polyethylene inserts packaged in non-conforming bags regardless of label or shelf-life.” The affected implants are used in total knee and ankle replacement surgeries. Hip implants / inserts may also be affected by the potential problem prompting the recall. The recall now affects more than 147,000 Exactech inserts that have been ordered and/or implanted since 2004, meaning a large class of individuals may qualify for an Exactech lawsuit.

The company said in its letter to surgeons that “most of our inserts manufactured since 2004 were packaged in out-of-specification … vaccuum bags,” reflecting the widespread impact of the recall and potentially defective medical devices. The letter also says that “surgeons should maintain an appropriate degree of suspicion for patients with any new or worsening pain, inability to bear weight, grinding or other noise, swelling, or instability in their knee and ankle.”

What Exactech Implants / Inserts Have Been Recalled?

In its announcement for surgeons and patients, Exactech outlined a wide range of inserts to be recalled. These include implants in the OPTETRAK, OPTETRAK Logic, TRULIANT, and VANTAGE knee insert and ankle insert systems. A full breakdown is included below, including the number of units sold in the United States since 2004.

IMPORTANT: Your health and safety are most important. If you’ve been implanted with one of the above recalled Exactech knee or ankle inserts (or were implanted with an Exactech hip insert that may not be covered by the recent recall), talk with your doctor right away about the potential health risks and options. These knee, ankle, and hip implants may increase your risk of potential health problems and even require additional surgery.

Why Are Exactech Implants Potentially Defective?

Degraded Exactech knee, ankle, or hip implants may cause pain, limited mobility, bone loss, and other problems, and also require revision surgery. In its recall announcement, Exactech stated that “non-conforming” bags may allow oxygen into the packaging, potentially causing the inserts / implants to degrade. While Exactech claims the bags remained oxygen-resistant, these “non-conforming” bags did not contain a second layer of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), which is intended to increase the bag’s resistance to oxygen.

The consequences of degraded knee inserts, hip inserts, and ankle inserts can be severe, potentially resulting in serious health problems and even revision and replacement surgeries.

Health Problems Potentially Caused by Defective Exactech Knee, Hip, and Ankle Implants

A variety of health problems — in addition to revision surgery — may be caused by defective, recalled Exactech knee implants and ankle implants. Hip implants may also be affected but investigation is ongoing. Specific health problems potentially linked to defective Exactech knee and ankle implants may include:

  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Limited mobility
  • Bone loss
  • Lysis (disintegration of bone cells)

Additionally, the knee implant or ankle implant may loosen over time, or even crack or fragment. In certain instances, “revision” surgery may be required to remove the defective Exactech implant and replace it with an alternative insert.

Do You Qualify for an Exactech Knee, Hip, or Ankle Implant Lawsuit?

If you’ve been implanted with a recalled Exactech knee or ankle implant, or a potentially qualifying hip implant, and later suffered from potentially related health problems or required revision / replacement surgery, you may qualify for compensation in an Exactech lawsuit.
