Does Roundup Cause Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma?

Does Roundup Cause Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup weed killer, may cause non-Hodgkins lymphoma and other types of cancer, according to recent research.

Roundup is banned in many countries outside the United States due to glyphosate’s potential health risks, including its connection to non-Hodgkins lymphoma. According to a 2019 review of scientific research, high exposure to glyphosate may increase the risk of developing non-Hodgkins lymphoma by 41 percent.

In the United States, thousands of Roundup lawsuits have been filed alleging that Roundup causes non-Hodgkins lymphoma, as well as other cancers like chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and multiple myeloma.

IMPORTANT: While most Roundup lawsuits have already settled (or are in settlement negotiations), there is still time to file a Roundup claim provided the case meets certain criteria. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or chronic lymphocytic leukemia after exposure to Roundup, please call 1-800-525-7111 today for a free consultation.

Bayer, the manufacturer of Roundup, strongly denies that Roundup causes non-Hodgkins lymphoma or other cancer, and the company has steadfastly denied any negligence or wrongdoing. Bayer faces thousands of Roundup lawsuits alleging that the world’s most popular herbicide causes cancer.

In 2020, Bayer reached a global settlement with tens of thousands of plaintiffs totaling more than $10 billion, however not all plaintiffs have agreed to the settlement — and there is still time to file a Roundup lawsuit if you believe Roundup caused your non-Hodgkins lymphoma or chronic lymphocytic leukemia and you meet certain criteria. Roundup and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

Can I Still File a Roundup Non Hodgkins Lymphoma Lawsuit

Evidence that Roundup causes non-Hodgkins lymphoma is significant and growing. For decades, scientific researchers have explored the potential link between glyphosate and NHL, and in 2019 a landmark meta-analysis delivered a bombshell:

According to the report, exposure to glyphosate (as contained in Roundup weed killer) may increase the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma by 41 percent.

While the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) maintains that glyphosate does not cause cancer, many scientists disagree. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry has concluded that “numerous studies reported risk ratios greater than one for associations between glyphosate exposure and risk of non-Hodgkins lymphoma or multiple myeloma.”

According to the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic,” meaning that it likely causes cancer in humans.

In the wake of these findings, many countries outside the United States have banned the use of glyphosate. These countries include France, Germany, Denmark, Thailand, and Vietnam, among others.

What is Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma?

Non-Hodgkins lymphoma or NHL is a cancer that begins in the lymphatic system, where white blood cells called lymphocytes grow abnormally and form growths (tumors) throughout the body. Non-Hodgkins lymphoma typically affects adults, but children can suffer from the cancer, as well.

There are many “subtypes” of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, according to the Mayo Clinic, including:

  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
  • Cutaneous B-cell lymphoma
  • Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
  • Follicular lymphoma
  • Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia

Survival rate for non-Hodgkins lymphoma can vary greatly based on many different factors, including the specific type of lymphoma (see above) and the age of the patient. The overall 5-year relative survival rate for people with NHL is 72 percent, according to the American Cancer Society. Individuals with non-Hodgkin lymphoma often experience cancer that spreads to other parts of the body, including the liver, bone marrow, or lungs.

Symptoms of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

There are many different signs and symptoms of NHL, including:

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin
  • Abdominal pain and swelling
  • Chest pain or coughing
  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Unexplained weight loss

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, talk with your doctor right away.

What is Roundup?

Roundup (glyphosate) is the world’s most widely used herbicide (weed killer). In the United States alone, nearly 300 million acres of croplands are sprayed with glyphosate annually.

Those potentially exposed to Roundup may be at increased risk of developing non-Hodgkins lymphoma or chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Who is at Risk of Roundup Exposure?

Roundup and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

Roundup is the most common herbicide in the United States. Some estimate that Roundup is used on as much as 90 percent of American croplands.

In addition to being used commercially, Roundup is also sold for consumer use in the United States, so millions of people could potentially be at risk of non-Hodgkins lymphoma possibly caused by Roundup.

Those who may be at increased risk of non-Hodgkins lymphoma potentially due to Roundup exposure include:

  • Farm and agricultural workers
  • Groundskeepers
  • Herbicide mixers, loaders, and applicators
  • Property owners near farms spraying Roundup
  • Property owners using Roundup on their residential property

To be clear, recent research suggests that Roundup may cause non-Hodgkins lymphoma, among other cancers.
