Elmiron Eye Damage Claims and Lawsuits
Do you qualify for an Elmiron lawsuit? Have you taken the popular bladder medication Elmiron and suffered serious Elmiron side effects? Alarming new research suggests there is a potential link between Elmiron bladder medication and severe eye damage.
If you’ve taken Elmiron and been diagnosed with retinal damage or other eye damage, you may be eligible for an Elmiron lawsuit — and you may be entitled to financial compensation.
Our Elmiron lawsuit lawyers have been holding negligent drug companies accountable for more than three decades. If your eye injury is due to potential negligence on the part of Elmiron manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of Johnson & Johnson), distributors, or another party, we believe that’s wrong and you deserve justice.
About the Elmiron Lawsuits
Elmiron lawsuits are being filed by people who have suffered severe side effects after taking Elmiron, a prescription medication used to treat interstitial cystitis. This condition is characterized by pain and discomfort in the bladder and pelvic area. Elmiron is the only FDA-approved oral treatment for this condition, but it is now linked to a severe eye disorder called pigmentary maculopathy. People who have taken Elmiron and developed this eye disorder may be eligible to file an Elmiron lawsuit.
The lawsuits allege that Janssen Pharmaceuticals failed to warn doctors and patients about the potential risks of taking Elmiron. It is believed that long-term use of the drug causes permanent damage to the macula, a part of the eye that is responsible for sharp vision. Symptoms of pigmentary maculopathy include blurred vision, difficulty reading, and difficulty adjusting to bright light.
The attorneys handling these lawsuits argue that Janssen should have been aware of the potential risks of taking their drug and should have warned doctors and patients about them.
If you or someone you love has taken Elmiron and developed pigmentary maculopathy (or another qualifying condition — see below), you may be eligible to file an Elmiron lawsuit. At Riddle & Brantley, one of our experienced lawyers can help you understand your legal rights and determine whether you have a valid claim. You may also be able to join an existing class action lawsuit against Janssen. Contact us at 1-800-525-7111 for a FREE consultation to learn more about your options if you have developed pigmentary maculopathy or other eye disorders after taking Elmiron.
Elmiron Lawsuits Consolidated into MDL
In December 2020, all the lawsuits against Elmiron were consolidated into a class action multi-district litigation (MDL). This MDL was assigned to Judge Brian Martinotti in New Jersey, who identified the parameters for a series of bellwether test trials.
Before being consolidated into an MDL, under 100 Elmiron lawsuits were pending against Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Since the establishment of the MDL, over 2,000 individual lawsuits have been filed and transferred into the MDL.
Elmiron Bellwether Trials Selected
Based on Judge Martinotti’s criteria, three cases were selected for the initial bellwether trials to determine the likely outcome of the Elmiron lawsuits. The first of these cases was initially scheduled to be heard in January 2023 but has since been postponed and will now occur in March 2023.
What’s Next for Elmiron Lawsuits?
The outcome of the bellwether trials will determine the next steps in the Elmiron lawsuits. These trials will demonstrate what kind of an outcome most of these lawsuits may have when presented to a jury, which will determine how the legal teams will proceed once these trials are concluded.
Legal experts and claimants will watch these lawsuits closely to see what outcomes and potential settlement amounts may be ordered once these cases are heard.
