Warning Signs of Abuse & Neglect

Elderly people are at risk of being abused and neglected in nursing home facilities. Many of these cases go unnoticed or are rarely reported. If you have a loved one who is in a nursing home facility, you should be aware of the warning signs of abuse.

General Evidence of Abuse

You can assume that an elderly individual is being abused if there are changes in their behavior such as tension between the elder and nursing home staff. If you suspect the elder is being abused, look for additional signs of abuse. Physical Abuse
  • Unexplained broken bones, dislocations or sprains
  • Bruises, scars or welts
  • Failing to take medications
  • Signs of restraint, such as rope marks on wrists
  • Broken eyewear
Emotional Abuse
  • Unusual behavior that resembles dementia such as mumbling, sucking one’s thumb, or rocking.
  • Witnessing belittling, controlling or threatening behavior from nursing home staff
Sexual Abuse
  • Bruising near the genitals or around the breasts
  • Unexplained STDs or other genital infections
  • Stained, bloody or torn underwear
Financial Abuse
  • Changes in the elder's finances
  • Unexplained withdrawals from bank accounts
  • Changes in power of attorney, life insurance policies, or wills
  • Missing cash from the elder’s room
  • ATM withdrawals when the elder is unable to do it themselves
  • Lack of medical care although they can afford it
  • Unusual goods, services or subscriptions purchased in their name
Caregiver Neglect
  • Left alone in public location
  • Unsafe living conditions, such as a lack of heat/AC, fire hazards or lack of running water
  • Unsuitably dressed for the weather conditions
  • Not bathed regularly
  • Dirty bedding, clothes, bugs or other dirty conditions
  • Bedsores
  • Unusual loss of weight or dehydration
