Belviq Cancer Lawsuit

Have you been diagnosed with cancer after taking Belviq? You may be entitled to compensation, and a Belviq cancer lawsuit attorney at Riddle & Brantley may be able to help.

Belviq (lorcaserin) is a prescription medicine manufactured by Eisai. Belviq is used for weight management in overweight and obese adults. While the FDA approved Belviq in 2012, in early 2020 the FDA ordered the withdrawal of Belviq and Belviq XR from the U.S. market due to potential cancer risk. Those affected may qualify for a Belviq cancer lawsuit or settlement and be entitled to significant financial compensation.

“Does Belviq cause cancer?”

As far back as 2010, the FDA has raised questions about Belviq and its potential connection to cancer. In early studies, there was increased incidence of mammary and brain tumors as well as adenocarcinoma (a type of cancer in glandular cells) in laboratory rates exposed to Belviq.

Despite these cancer concerns, the FDA approved Belviq as a weight management drug for the U.S. market in 2012. In 2016, Belviq XR (an extended release version) was approved, as well.

However, approval of Belviq was based in part on a requirement that long-term studies be conducted in order to evaluate the drug’s safety.

In 2018, the Belviq long-term study concluded, finding that many different types of cancers occurred more frequently in patients taking Belviq and Belviq XR.

What is Belviq?

Belviq is a prescription medication for weight management among overweight and obese adults. It is commonly referred to as a diet pill. In 2012 the FDA approved Belviq to treat U.S. adults with at least one weight-related condition, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), or high cholesterol.

The active ingredient in Belviq is lorcaserin. Lorcaserin activates a receptor in the brain and scientists believe this receptor’s activation can make a person feel “full” and potentially prevent over-eating.

While Belviq was approved in 2012 by the FDA, long-term studies have revealed that Belviq may cause cancer, and the FDA requested a full withdrawal from the market in 2020.
