Roundup Lawsuit Update: Bayer Would Consider “Reasonable” Settlement

Roundup lawsuits are piling up, and a potential settlement may be on the horizon.

Roundup Weed Killer Lawsuits - Glyphosate Cancer Risk - Riddle & Brantley

According to Bayer, which acquired Roundup-manufacturer Monsanto in 2018, the company now faces more than 18,000 lawsuits alleging that its popular weed killer causes cancer.

Monsanto has lost three high-profile Roundup cancer lawsuits in recent months, in which juries determined that the weed killer’s active ingredient, glyphosate, was a factor in plaintiffs developing non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Last month, a judge reduced a $2 billion award to $87 million in a case involving a husband and wife, both groundskeepers who used Roundup regularly.

Thousands allege Roundup caused non-Hodgkins lymphoma

Roundup is used on roughly 80 percent of American croplands and agricultural workers and groundskeepers are frequently exposed to glyphosate.

The Roundup cancer lawsuits allege that Monsanto manipulated research, regulatory authorities and the media to conceal findings that glyphosate causes cancer.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), however, maintains that glyphosate is safe, and the cases have proven controversial. Bayer continues to defend Roundup and insists it has done nothing wrong.

Roundup weed killer lawsuits have hit Bayer’s stock price hard. According to a report, last year Bayer’s share price fell roughly 40 percent following its acquisition of Monsanto.

Is a Roundup settlement close?

Facing pressure from both the courts and shareholders, Bayer is sending signals that it may be willing to settle the Roundup cancer lawsuits.

The company has acknowledged that it faces a “challenging environment,” and CEO Werner Baumann says that Bayer would consider a “reasonable” settlement.

Bayer stock fell another 3 percent following the announcement.
